If you have seen Christopher Nolan’s movie The Odyssey, you may be wondering how close it is to the ancient Greek poem. Professor Susanna Lennox (UBC 2007-2021) will offer analysis of the Homeric poem and the movie. She will also introduce you to poems, novels and music inspired by the Odyssey, including works by Margaret Atwood and Madeline Miller. Her focus will be the encounters between Odysseus and the female–princesses, sorceresses, nymphs and goddesses–as he makes his long journey home to his wife Penelope after the Trojan War. Susanna will show how this central story in Greek mythology continues to influence literature and music in the 20th and 21st centuries.
